The reason the two bags are different (other than size) is because they are two different versions of the bag. Small version is older, and the Medium version is newer. They added the handles back on all sizes. So, if you want a small with handles, you can get it. As the writing of this post, both versions are still on the Northface website.

Does the handle (the one with Velcro) get in the way of the shoulder straps when you’re using it as a backpack? Surely you’d feel it against your back?
