Kanye West is a visionary. His first collection showed that right there and then. Not only his music, but everything he works on comes from great talent. This is coming from an over-40 year old.

I think it’s still relevant, just not as popular as it used to be. Kanye will always have his spot solidified in the fashion and street world for making history and starting that conversation that these two worlds can be mixed. The high fashion and street that is. Kanye opened the doors for the generations of tomorrow to start their own conversation

Honestly I think the only thing that kept the Yeezy brand afloat is Kanye being who he is. His celebrity has helped him tremendously in his fashion endeavors. If a no name up and coming designer put out those collections I can 99% guarantee they would have been laughed out of the industry. This is why I have a problem with celebs trying to cross over into fashion because it will always turn into a hype thing just based on their name. And it takes away from the many small designers that have dedicated their lives to designing. Yeezy is purely a hype brand, nothing more.

Think this is giving too much credit to Kanye. Kanye basically was inspired by Yohji Yamamoto, and Rick Owens. You can say he brought in a lot of casuals into high end fashion, but I don’t think you can extend that into influencing the designers and high end fashion itself as a whole.

I think certain brands can certainly be elevated by someone like Kanye, just like how Bape was elevated by Pharrell, but the fashion brands and designers were already a thing prior to those celebs and they were already influenced by other designers or cultures before the celebs highlighting their brands. For example, BAPE was already a thing for like 10+ years before Pharrell caught on and it was certainly already a thing before Pharrell in the streetwear industry. Pharrell just brought more attention to the brand for non-fashion fans.

I do think Kanye sparked a 2nd wave of interest among Americans like Pharrell did in the 2000s (or by that token Nike SB and sneaker culture). I also do think his brand was much more influential to young fans more so than Pharrell ever was with BBC (influenced by all over print Bape was famous for).

Unlike Pharrell, Kanye was much more patient in creating his fashion brand than Pharrell was. Pharrell just jumped into creating his brand after he was hugely inspired by BAPE. Kanye was inspired by Japanese fashion for years going from BAPE to Yohji to Owens. He had a longer time to digest high end fashion and was thus a better designer as his taste was better. He got to see what worked for him, what worked for the industry, and where the industry was going, making it work to his brand’s advantage.
