Tuxedo was/us the name of a club in Tuxedo Park in New York state. The dinner jacket was created at the behest of Edward 7th by Henry Poole & Co. Who wanted something a little more comfortable than the ‘tailed’ evening coat. They also supplied formal wear to the US. It is alleged that the dinner jacket first appeared at the Tuxedo Club, hence the American term tuxedo. Generally a dinner jacket has a shawl collar, no pocket flaps, and no vent at the rear. In sime terms, it’s a ‘tailed’ coat with the tails cut off.
