I believe the trouble most people have with wearing black is because they think about the color differently than others when it really doesn’t have to be thought of that way.

When you think about blue, you think about everything from midnight and navy blue to sky blue and every shade of blue in between. When you think about black, you think about black and maybe faded black.

Instead of thinking about black as black, think about it like blue. Think about everything from black to charcoal to dark gray to mid gray to light gray and all the nuanced shades in between. Can you see it? How versatile black really is? There’s a reason why mid gray flannel (dare I say mid black flannel) goes with everything.

Now lets revisit the first set of outfits again and instead of comparing a navy jacket paired with a light blue striped shirt to what was presented, we compare it to a black jacket with a light black (aka gray) striped shirt. Viola! An apples to apples comparison and assuming you get the materials right, a worthy competitor.

Lastly, we compare the second outfit but this time after establishing that the burgundy works with the black, swap the pieces under the jacket. I think you’ll find that the light black rollneck/turtleneck works just fine with the black jacket.

Great content. I am fully in agreement with you Chris. A black jacket is indelibly linked with formality and does not ‘jazz up’ terribly well. At 4:52, I think the grey roll-neck sweater would go equally well with the black jacket for a monochrome theme, and in place of the polo shirt, a burgundy roll-neck sweater would also look good. I note that the pocket square has notes of burgundy and is, sensibly, quite muted. With a black jacket, no one wants the accessory hogging all of the attention.

Black works really well in casual clothing like t-shirts, polo shirts, jeans, sneakers and casual jackets such as bomber jackets but when it comes to sports jackets, blazers, suits, dress shirts it just doesn’t work so great.

I was told and have always abided by a rule that you should never wear solid colored trousers of the same color as your jacket, i.e., blue trouser with a blue blazer.
Is this not correct?
I’d like to see the complete outfits. Can you add the pant options to the display?

I am curious what you would think about a pastel pink shirt with black jacket, and houndstooth black and white pants? I really like the look, but I never know if it works or not?

I have worn a cream colored shirt open collared with a black suit. In my opinion, that is a good way to wear a black suit without it being too formal looking. Others may disagree and that’s fine. I have never considered the black sport coat though. Something to think about I guess.

Classical music ensembles are eschewing the tuxedo or tails for “gender-neutral” all black. I’d love to find a really nice black jacket, as I’d actually use it far more than my Navy, which I agree is far more versatile.

@ChrisModo, Personally I’d have liked to seen both jackets made of the same material. The blue has a sheen the black doesn’t. Perhaps it would be too much in black? I do see what you mean black being an evening color. In the past I ate dinner out a lot at nice restaurants so my black suit, black top coat and dark sports coats got a lot of use. By the by, I hate button down collars!

I personally like wearing black with neutral earth tones, beige, cream etc, going for a strong contrast. Not sure about a tailored jacket myself but I’ve seen a black sports jacket with beige tailored trousers before.
