I have had this bag for about 5 years. On the whole mine has served me well, but there are some peculiarities that I would consider design flaws. You show the laptop compartment zipping open all the way. If you don’t close that zipper all the way, and the front part of the bag is heavy, it will pull that back zipper open and the contents of that back compartment will spill onto the rainy street. In my case, it was my e-reader, and some important documents. I wrote to North Face and suggested they put buckles or clasps on the side to prevent it from accidentally opening, but they responded saying they don’t take improvement suggestions from customers. It seems they think they know better.
As you point out, the shape also means the public-facing side of the bag is constantly dirty. Not the greatest look.

But it is sturdy, and well-made. after 5 years of near daily use with a load of ~8 kg, it has some wear marks (especially at the back where the pack abuts my butt), where the outer layer of fabric has worn off and the underlying padding is showing.

You have made the best backpack reviews I have seen, thanks Kendrick! I am struggling to choose between this and the Surge Transit. I like the Overhaul because it is “cleaner” as it does not have the side straps and it seems to have more organizers in the main compartment, but the fact that it flops over may be annoying.

Nice review! Thanks Kendrick. I was stuck between this bag and the Northface Router Transit. I ended up going with the Router Transit. I think it was the superior bag. Check it out! That’s my daily carry bag and for one bag travel I use the Osprey Porter 46. Love your reviews keep them coming 🙂
