Great video very informative
130g in which size? thanks!
sectionhiker reported he got numerous holes in his jacket during testing. There appear to be at least 2 generations of this jacket: A 2017 video review from Josh Fields shows velcro cuff adjusters.
The non-sealable cuffs make this jacket unsuitable for cycling. By the way, this video feels like an advertisement. I know you mentioned some negatives, but the music and everything gives it the feel of an ad. That guy Neemor (sp?) you mentioned is compensated for his reviews.
Good review!
However I don’t agree. If you had a good rain when you hiked in Scotland with the added grime and oil you give to the garment it’ll wet through eventually. When I look at rain gear it’s to keep me WARM, not dry. That’s why I think people buy heavy Goretex rain gear in the hope that they’ll keep dry as that’s the state that you’re comfortable with at home. If you hike, you’ll be wet sooner or later, by perspiration in the rain or by the rain, or potentially both. Goretex don’t dry fast either so double the issue there.
Said it before, will say again – here for the food, great channel 🙂
Some vegan meals would be awesome.
Check out paramo Quito jacket. Wind proof, waterproof, huge side/pit zips, full length front zip. Waterproof even if holed/small tear. It works a completely different way than usual waterproofs but it works. Wear mine in uk every hike and unless weather gets really warm I never have to stop and take off/put on. Mountain rescuers use them.
Researched the LDWA forum and found a link to an excellent article Worth taking a look.
Interesting, how does it compare to the Zpacks Vertice rain jacket with 20000 mmH2O water resistance level?
I do still like my Outdoor Research Helium HD (2.5 membrane and with arm pits)
Another great review with so many good points, thanks.
I can see the advantages, but at £189 I think I’ll give this a miss in favour of much cheaper alternatives that I, and I suspect many other hikers, already have. In winter, spring and autumn the usual mechanically ventilated or “breathable” membrane jackets will do, admittedly not 100% functionality. In summer a poncho will do quite well. It is not “breathable” but the mechanical ventilation is considerable, particularly if you “flap” the material periodically to increase ventilation. Also it doubles as a useful additional ground sheet to put under your tent inner on wet ground. Maybe if costs reduce with competition these new jackets will gain market share, but I think many of us will wait a while before making the change.
Arc’teryx and Montbell both do not advise the use of their shake-dry jackets for thru-hiking. Arc’teryx has a jacket like this now for three years although it is sold out quickly every time they do a new batch. Their Norvan jacket combines holes under the zips with ordinary gore-tex. It is however 50 g heavier than the typical non shake-dry UL jacket but it will hold for at least 5k miles. It is just too expensive but it will keep you dry in 10+ hours of constant rain.
