Regarding the cost aspect of Gore Tex you can get some great bargains on any jacket if you shop around. I got the Mountain Equipment Saltoro Gore Tex jacket for £175. £270 on ME website. Was speaking with staff at Cairngorm mountain over Christmas and they also thought highly of the DLX stuff from Trespass. One of the mountain rescue guys had a DLX outer shell and it performed very well.
